In 1970-71 the Parish of the Holy Spirit started Catechism classes for the La Salle school boys because their school was temporary closed due to structural problems. The children shared classes with the Government schools where no catechism was offered. It was during the term of Fr. M. Surmon with the late Brother Thomas Dunne who initiated and helped to set up these classes. The children were first taught by laity volunteers and some La Salle postulants. Later seminarians came in to help.
Catechism was only for Primary School Catholic children and lessons were held around the church compound and even in the parochial house. Later on the Convent Green Lane girls also joined in this parish Catechetics. The classes developed from primary to secondary and the need for proper classrooms was felt.
The Parent Catechists Committee was formed and endorsed on the 29 th April 1988 to get parents interested and involved in the needs of the children and teachers.
In 1997 three floors of classrooms were opened in the new building to house the increasing number of students . From the 70s to the 90s the chairmanship responsibility of the Christian Education Committee was alternately shared by Maureen David and Juliana Chang. Many dedicated teachers put in great effort to instil in our children Christian knowledge and values.
The attendance of the students continued to improve with the ruling of having ‘at least 80 percent ’ and prizes for all students with a 100 percent attendance during the term of Msgr. Stephen Liew and chairmanship of Dr. Marina David. There were valuable retreats and various formation programmes organized for the teachers to enhance their teaching skills and even the classrooms were air-conditioned to give a more conducive environment for learning. The children library was opened and a resource room for the teachers’ visual aids was made available.
The C.E.C. was restructured in 2006. The term Chairperson was replaced with a Coordinator who is assisted by the Assistant Coordinator, the Secretary and Treasurer. The other members of the Core Team consists of Representatives from the Parents Catechist Association (P.C.A.), Administration, Library and Resource Room. The C.E.C. is run with the help of all these sections to ease the teachers of paper work, food and physical arrangements during gatherings and camps.
With the strong support of our priests, parents, the dedication of our teachers and the enthusiasm of our youths we can only look forward to better days. It is hoped that our effort bear fruits with our trust in the guidance of the Holy Spirit to walk in the footsteps of our Lord as we give all the glory to our Father in Heaven.
