It is with delight that I speak to you as we begin the Lenten Penance and the Synodal Journey in this Year of the Lord 2023.
Traditionally, the Church tells us to Pray, Fast and Give. And I would like to add ‘and Receive.’
Pray, Fast, Give and Receive.
What is the call? The call is Baptism.
What is the identity? The identity is “I am a disciple of Jesus Christ”.
What is the gift? The gift for this journey, the Holy Spirit who comes with both the Fire of Communion and the Fire of Mission.
What is the destiny? Abba, Father. The Father of Jesus Christ.
Pope Francis in his Lenten Message 2023 tells us two things:-
- Listen to My Son – Jesus Christ.
- Rise and Do Not Be Afraid.
The Synodal Journey of Lent will climax on Easter night, the night of glorious baptisms throughout the Diocese of Penang. Baptisms in Kelantan, in Kedah, in Perlis, in Perak, in Penang and beyond.
Of course, I invite you to join the Diocesan Caritas Lenten Campaign with the theme “Renew our Hearts to Care”.
Finally, pray with me this prayer, each one of you, and the prayer is very simple. It says:-
Lord, how are You inviting me to Pray, Fast, Give and Receive this Lent 2023?”
Just a little warning. The Lord may surprise you with the answer.
So have a wonderful journey ahead of you, beginning on Ash Wednesday and culminating on Easter Night.
