In Matthew 9:15 of today’s Gospel reading, I understand that Jesus is teaching us that fasting shows our longing for Christ. Second thing is He explains that His disciples will fast, eventually, when the bridegroom is taken away. Looking back after Jesus had been fully revealed as the Messiah and the Son of God, after His death and resurrection and return to heaven, this illustration comes into clear focus.
In today’s Gospel of Matthew, I understand that Jesus is teaching us that fasting is a manifestation of our desire for Jesus. Jesus also mentioned the second thing that is when the bridegroom is taken from the disciples, then they will fast. The picture is so clear when Jesus has revealed himself to be the Son of God, dead and born again, ascended to heaven, and we look back at this gospel.
